Hope Lutheran Church Records
Hope Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Southern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is located in the South Park Historic District, walking distance southeast of downtown Dayton, Ohio. Founded in 1881 and always using the English language the Hope congregation has served its neighborhood and the Dayton region for over 125 years. To accommodate rapid growth the very beautiful large building located at 500 Hickory Street was built and opened in 1903. A major addition with class rooms and a fellowship hall was built in the 1920s. In the early post World War II era the congregation grew strongly again, but like most older urban churches membership steadily declined throughout the last quarter of the 20th century as people migrated from the once densely populated central city to more distant suburban communities. The church building continues to be used by its members for regular Sunday worship services and as a community center for the South Park neighborhood. In recent years the Hope Arts Center was opened in the building's Sunday school wing to provide studio spaces for artists and musicians in the area.
