A Stroll Through History at Calvary Cemetery
Saturday, June 1
A Stroll Through History at Calvary Cemetery  (Special Event)
1:30 pm
Calvary Cemetery, 1625 Calvary Ave, Kettering, OH 45409

Join the Montgomery County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society and Calvary Cemetery on Saturday, June 1, 2024, for the second of four tours scheduled for 2024.

These tours are designed for the purpose of telling the stories of the people who built and contributed to Dayton and Montgomery County. Who were they and what did they do?

The Calvary Cemetery tour, hosted by the MCC-OGS, will take visitors to various areas of the cemetery and stop at specific gravesites to highlight a person or family to tell the story of what they did during their lifetime.

Calvary is one of the older cemeteries on this tour and has more of a religious focus as a Catholic-based cemetery. We’ll learn how St. Henry’s Chapel got its name and some interesting examples of the cemetery merger that happened which affects genealogy research today.

Visitors on the tour will visit the gravesites of prominent businessmen, religious leaders and those heavily involved in the community during their lifetime.

Calvary Cemetery is a great example of how the past meets the present with a number of families who were buried there when it opened and still have those buried there today. We’ll explore how close-knit the community was and still is with people who worked together to make the area a better place.

Calvary is also a great example of how cemeteries and churches play an important role in genealogy research.

Adoptee Searches in Genealogical Research by Lynn Grubb  (Monthly Meeting)
1:30 pm
Dayton Metro Library, Community Room 2-B, 215 E 3rd Street, Dayton, OH 45402 and Via Zoom
Our speaker, Lynn Grubb said:  "I always knew I was adopted.  I was told early enough that I have no memory of it. I was born in Chicago, Illinois, in the middle of the Baby Scoop Era--a time when middle-class single white women were not encouraged to keep and raise their babies.  After being cared for by on-site nurses at an adoption agency in Chicago, my parents picked me up when I was two and a half months old.  They were thrilled."

Speaking from the personal experience of searching for and finding her biological family, Lynn will talk about her journey and provide tips on researching adoptees.

1:30 pm
Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery, 8135 N Dixie Dr, Dayton, OH 45414
Join the Montgomery County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society and Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery on Saturday, October 12, 2024, for the last of our four cemetery tours. This tour will be in place of our regular monthly meeting.

These tours are designed for the purpose of telling the stories of the people who built and contributed to Dayton and Montgomery County. Who were they and what did they do?

The Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery tour, hosted by the MCC-OGS, will take visitors around the cemetery and stop at specific gravesites to highlight that person and/or family to tell the story of what they did during their lifetime.

Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery is the newest in comparison to the other cemeteries that were on the 2024 tour schedule so they don’t have the pioneers, but they still have stories to tell.

Throughout the tour, visitors will experience a variety of people who are buried here.

  • Collection of local race car drivers
  • A local historian who documented Dayton’s history in photographs.
  • Collection of local and state politicians
  • Aviation pioneers
  • Hollywood TV and movie star
  • We’ll even meet a person who was buried and later identified using DNA technology

Dayton Memorial Park will also provide great examples of what can be learned from a cemetery for genealogy researchers.
